Caroline Wellbery MD PhD is Professor at Georgetown University Medical School and Associate Deputy Editor of American Family Physician. She received her medical degree from the University of California/San Francisco in 1991 and completed her Family Medicine residency at Community Hospital, Santa Rosa, California in 1994. She also received a PhD in Comparative Literature from Stanford University in 1982 and has devoted her career to the integration of art, literature and medicine. In recent years, she has focused on interdisciplinary collaboration to institute changes in the undergraduate medical curriculum. She has two on-going grant-funded projects, one is to investigate students’ ability to broaden their empathy to address the needs of disadvantaged populations, the other to explore the feasibility of introduce climate change-related curricula across medical schools. Current publications include “Choosing a healthy diet based on sustainable foods” (in press, American Family Physician); “Arts observation: A pedagogical framework” (Academic Medicine) and “Code Green,” a commentary on physicians’ role in addressing climate change (JAMA) She developed a medical humanities website that can be accessed at mdarts.georgetown.edu.
